Freedom, Responsibility by Mattea - September 2014 Scholarship Essay

You have just begun college. No longer do your parents tell you when curfew is nor do they give you a weekly allowance. No longer do your teachers remind you of homework or check up on your grades weekly. You have a new found freedom. However, no longer is class a time for homework. Now you are in charge of yourself, you pay for your own stuff. You have to remember your own homework and check your grade. Classes are now two hours of lecture, not including the hours of study awaiting you. You also have a new found responsibility.

This is not an essay with a proper thesis or proper transitions. I have proven my ability to write papers with my good grades and relatively high test scores. This is about why I think TIME-MANAGEMENT is the most important skill in college. Why would I say that when most others would write about hard-work, dedication, or critical thinking? Because you use those every day in high school.

Never in your life do you get exposed to as much freedom as college when you start college. You go from having your entire year’s events being made out for you by advisors, coaches, parents, and administration to making all of your own decisions. You go from having to ask just to use the restroom to deciding if you even want to go to class. College includes way more social events, athletic events, extracurriculars, and classes than high school. If you have not learned to manage your time properly, you will fail the test you neglected to study for when you decided to go to that Greek party instead.

I have learned from my six older siblings about the changes between high school and college. Managing a work schedule to pay all of your new bills, a class schedule that ensures you get your degree on time, and a social life with all of the new people you have met is HARD. People who don’t learn to manage these responsibilities DO NOT succeed in college. And in the word's of Forest Gump "And that's all I have to say about that."
