MaryJo Then and Now by MaryJo - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

When I was six, I wanted to become a nurse. I wanted to help people. I wanted to make their lives better by improving their health. I was born with hemangeoendotheleomas (blood-filled tumors in my liver). I spend 9 weeks in the hospital as an infant overcoming this setback. My early childhood was filled with my parents telling me and the people around me “my story.” I was a miracle baby. I heard what medical science had done for me, and wanted to be a blessing for others.
There are several aspects of my education that have molded me into who I am today. As I grew up and played sports in school, I realized that I was an outdoor-type of person. I enjoyed the element of a team working toward a common goal. I have been actively involved in horse 4-H and in FFA classes in high school. Working with my horse has taught me that diligence is rewarded. The hard work of sticking to a task, even when it is inconvenient, yields to great outcomes. I have also taken a Winter Survival class at my local community college. I learned many outdoor tricks and had a great experience. I have gone on multiple mission trips that have educated me in dealing with underprivileged people. I have learned much about opening my heart to others. Giving is a very fulfilling life skill.
I soon recognized that an indoor job would not bring me contentment. I enjoy the outdoor environment in all seasons. Having the sun on my face and breathing fresh air makes me happy. I am currently enrolled as an Outdoor Recreation major. I still want to make the lives of people around me better. My future will be spent taking people on outdoor adventures that give them a mental break from the grind of life. These adventures will restore their emotional and mental health. They will be physically healthier from the exertion required in the activities. I still want to improve the condition of life for the people around me, but I will be going about it from a different direction.
