My School Accomplishment by Mary Margaret - December 2016 Scholarship Essay

There are some students who hit a rough spot in their life and they lead themselves to believe that there is no hope for them and that giving up or giving in is the only option. During the summer of my senior year of high school, I, unfortunately, was diagnosed with cholecystitis, an inflammation of the gallbladder, and gallbladder tumors which caused my body to be unable to digest fats, both good and bad, in my diet. Because of this, I was unable to eat or have any form of nutrition without extreme nausea and/or vomiting and lost nearly thirty pounds. Due to the lack of nutrition and constant doctor visits, I was forced to miss out on a majority of classes and school events during my senior year.

After my surgery in November of 2013, I was able to continue with school, bring my grades up, and pass all my final exams for the first semester even after teachers and faculty had told both my parents and I that it would be impossible to be able to do so and even began the paperwork necessary for keeping me in high school another year. Once the semester had ended, I was fortunate enough to be accepted into the Licensed Practical Nursing program at the local technical school. Upon graduation from high school at seventeen, I was also in the process of obtaining a nursing license in the state of Florida.

I have always been able to push myself to be able to prove those wrong who say I can't do certain tasks. Many would argue that graduation from high school is not that big of an accomplishment but, for those who are in jeopardy due to a medical issue, small victories and minor accomplishments are something to be extremely proud of and something to be celebrated.
