The Door of Opportunites by Mary - April 2020 Scholarship Essay

Is chasing after a higher degree of education worth the effort? Many people believe that a college degree is unnecessary. However, I believe this opinion is incorrect. As society advances, the value and quality of education improves. Thousands of years ago our ancestors did not have the opportunity to pursue the current level of education that is available to the majority of the world. Thus, people must utilize this situation to their own advantage. Many traditional occupations require their workers to have attended a college. Additionally, to possible and unexpected events, stay-at-home-parents may find that they need a college education. Attending college may even help students find their identity. Thus, college is a vital door for many opportunities.

Having a college education is mandatory for a lot of careers. Attaining a well paying job is very competitive. The people who are hiring want the most qualified employees to work for them. It is a known fact that, people who have had a college education are seen as more intelligent compared to people who have not. Thus, an applicant with a college degree is more likely to be chosen. Furthermore, even if a person without a degree manages to get chosen for a job, they are still at a higher risk of losing it to a more qualified potential employee. Edson Arantes do Nascimento, a professional soccer player once stated, “There is always someone out there who is getting better than you by training harder than you.” In a way getting a job is similar to soccer: both are competitive. Moreover, people with college degrees tend to get higher salaries. For instance, college educated police officers make more money than police officers who do not have a college degree. A cop with a master’s degree will earn 5,119 dollars more than a cop without a degree. Going to college is like training for a soccer competition because it can drastically improve a person’s chance of "winning". Therefore, college education is beneficial because it improves the chances of obtaining a stable job and a higher income.

Even stay at home parents may need a college degree. Many people choose to have a family over a career may feel secure at home. However, they may not be secure forever. Life is unpredictable and it is important for all parents to be prepared to support themselves and their children. In this society a college degree can help people achieve a life of comfort. Many stay-at-home parents may depend on their spouse for money. However, there are many chances that their spouse may become ill or even dies. If their spouse cannot support them, then who will support the children? Unfortunately, a job that does not require a college degree may not provide enough money to support an entire family. By that time it may be too late to enroll in a college because of the all of the accumulated expenses. However, this issue can be prevented by getting a college degree ahead of time. In addition, it is not always too late to attend college. If the family is in a financially stable situation, then they stay-at-home parent can prepare for their future by getting a college degree. By attaining a college degree, the parent could even get a job after their children leave home. Furthermore, many stay-at-home parents might feel bored when their children leave, so they might want to get a job or expand their education. Overall, college degrees can help keep a person’s future secure and fulfilled.

Attending college has many benefits and can help fulfill their need for development. According to Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of needs physiological needs must first be satisfied. Next, the needs for safety, belonging, and esteem must also be satisfied. The advancement of society has facilitated attaining satisfaction of the majority of these needs. However, many people have not yet satisfied their need of self-actualization, the highest level of Maslow's hierarchy. Yet college gives students the chance to meet all of these needs. Students can socialize and join various clubs that their college offers. Furthermore, building connections with various students may satisfy their need for belonging and may be beneficial in the future when finding a job. In college, students must also learn how to be responsible due the experiences it provides. For instance, they must make sure to stay on track with the material their professors are teaching them. They must also learn how to balance managing finances and keeping up with their academics. However, hard work will pay off and the need of esteem may be satisfied when the students finally graduate. Furthermore, students may also feel a sense of accomplishment and boost in confidence by finishing their pursuit of college education. This situation also increases the possibility of attaining self-actualization. Thus, when students graduate they can take advantage of their education to contribute to the world and reach their own full potential.

To sum up, pursuing college education is an important and beneficial priority. The progression of society has made college education more necessary. Consequently, people must keep up with the times due to these various reasons. Having a college degree can make attaining and keeping a job easier. A college degree may also eventually become a necessity for stay-at-home parents. In addition, college can help people facilitate the development of students. Are you willing to face the endless possibilities colleges provide?
