Are leadership skills necessary for college success? Why or why not? by Marquel - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

I believe that leadership skills are necessary for college success. In fact, I want to take it a step further and say that “Good” Leadership skills are necessary in and out of classroom environments. If I don’t possess the skills that attribute to my ability to lead, I won’t achieve much success. By being a good leader you are being looked up to by others and setting a good example. I currently exhibit my leadership skills while I’m in class by helping my peers with assignments or asking questions that other students would otherwise not. By doing this I’m not so intimidated with transitioning into college. I will take leadership if I see something wrong with my grade because college professors probably won’t check on every individual student they have. So I will have to use leadership skills to actively make time and meet with my teacher to discuss the grade I have and what is needed to improve if necessary.

Leadership skills are also necessary on campus. If I have a paper due the next day but my friends invite me to go out with them, I’m going to be a good leader and take a stand against going out. I’m sure that without having leadership skills while attending college I will be more susceptible to being unsuccessful. With peer pressure being very prevalent within a college atmosphere, as long as I possess the skills to lead my friends into doing class work instead of partying all night, then I will be setting a good example while achieving my goal of successfully graduating college.

Thank you,
Marquel Ballard-Chacon
