Giving Education A Purpose by Marissa - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

Does education have a purpose? You may ask many people this question and they will give you the simple answer of “yes”, but without a reason why it has a purpose or what the purpose is. You may find this as a surprise when I say this but no, education does not have a purpose to everyone. It is used in most lines of work, but when someone does not work at all a good education might as well have been completely bypassed.

Education only has a purpose if the person receiving the education puts their knowledge to use. On one hand, you have a Person A who went to school and sat through classes every day, but when they went out into the real world after graduation they chose to not go into the labor force and use their knowledge. On the other hand, you have Person B who did the exact same as the person A, but they chose to join the labor force after graduation. Any skills that they learned in school like reading, writing, typing, and etcetera can be used in their day to day lives in their line of work. Person A is an example of how education has no purpose, while Person B is an example of how education serves a purpose.

While you may find my opinion rather odd it is true that education does have a purpose in most situations, but unfortunately there is another side where education has no purpose at all. No matter what line of work someone joins their education will carry them through it even if it is only a high school education it is something. Education does have a purpose, but not for everyone and in every situation.
