The Future: Online Education by Marissa - May 2020 Scholarship Essay

I believe education, in 50 years, will become completely virtual. Throughout the pandemic, schools have had to learn how to adapt to distance learning. Public schools that did not have a pre-existing technology grant had a difficult time creating a smooth transition to online. However, many students feel as if they are excelling in their studies from home. For students to study at their own pace and from the comfort of their home has become compelling.
Studying from home seems to show benefits. From my own experience and other students, doing school work from home relieves a lot of stress. There is no pressure from their surroundings, so their work quality has increased. Yes, students are abusing the honesty system. Though it is not admirable, overall grades and confidence have risen. On the other hand, there are reasons to be skeptical of complete virtual learning.
A concern parents had with distance learning was their access to the internet and necessities the students had at school. Not only were there concerns on students having access to their work, but school lunches and breakfasts could be some student's only meals for the day. Underprivileged families have seen a decrease in food and other supplies, which has caused concern among the masses. But the virus has not stopped those families receiving their meals. If schools were to go online completely, the government could still offer meals to those families.
Though the concerns are real, the positive effect on mental health and overall morale is exceedingly significant. If the student wants to cheat themselves of their education, they will always find a way to do it. Yet, there will always be students who succeed from being at home and learning at their own pace. I feel that schools will end up with complete virtual learning within 50 years.
