The Positive Aspects of Being a Leader by Marisa - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
During your college education you hope to not only gain the knowledge that you need in order to be successful but to develop important skill sets as well. While there are many skill sets that can allow a person to be successful in college the most desirable is having good leadership skills. Leadership skills can lead to developing other important qualities in a college student and in this essay I will discuss those very qualities.
Often when people think of someone having great leadership skills they think of a person that is very hot headed and just bosses around others. However there is a difference between someone that is good at leading others and someone that just likes to control others. Truly having good leadership skills allows the person to guide and direct others while also taking into consideration how the people around them feel and how they should be treated. Leadership skills lead to better working environment and shows that the person is able to get along with others. If you’re put into groups in a college class the whole point is to be able to collaborate with your fellow students and not just assume that your way is the right way. This can sometimes be difficult if your ego wants to get in the way but good leadership skills will keep the person in check of how controlling they are being.
Aside from just listening to lectures, college is also a place to express your opinion and also form your own goals and plans. A person that has good leadership skills often times is very passionate of what they want to do. Whether it’s educational goals or wanting to include their input during class leaders are comfortable taking charge and setting high hopes for themselves. This doesn’t necessarily apply to just shouting out answers or having to voice your opinion for every little thing but instead showing that you are truly passionate about your goals or your opinions. It is one thing to say that you are going to do something but to actually show the conviction to back it up can demonstrate to your professors and your future employers that you will follow through with what you are saying.
Throughout college and even life in general obstacles are going to be thrown your way. Some people will choose to panic and freeze but there are others that are able to take action and try to make the best possible decision at this time. People with great leadership skills fall into the latter category and having this ability to make quick decisions will help them in college. Should there be a pop quiz or an unscheduled college event, having good leadership skills will allow you to roll with the punches and will prevent them from panicking. Having the advantage of being able to take control doesn’t have to just apply to controlling others but also to how you react in certain situations.
As you can see having great leadership skills are not only beneficial but at times very necessary to succeed in college. Whether you are put into situations where you have to lead a group or something unexpected comes up being able to take charge will help you rise above others during your college experience. This just shows how necessary it is to be able to develop and nourish these important skills during your college education so that way they will help you succeed even higher once you graduate.
