What Does College Success Mean? by Mario - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

What does college success mean? Does it mean getting a degree? Does it mean getting good grades on college courses? Being successful in college is not about the grades received or the degree obtained; being successful in college is about increasing your knowledge by stretching your capabilities, networking to build strong professional relationships, and increasing your capabilities as a leader.

Leadership is crucial to college success, because it is what separates a student that just goes through the motions from a student who is anxiously engaged in bettering themselves, through their education. One of my mentors once told me that during team projects I should not take tasks that are easy for me to do, but that I should try my best to perform the tasks that are challenging to me so that I may gain confidence in doing them. Our knowledge and skills are like muscles, they must be stretched to their breaking point, so that they may rebuild stronger. When a student is a leader, their college experience goes from seeking easy tasks and easy courses to pass, to strategically choosing courses and tasks that will build them as a person and as a leader.

These student leaders make the most of their education by helping others succeed. Leaders lead others by example and by helping others grow and gain a valuable education. When leaders do this they strategically build lasting relationships and network in a way that they will forever have great contacts wherever they go. In today’s political corporate structures and competitive work environment the best way to obtain a great job is through networking. College success involves creating network channels by which successful student leaders can be discovered and obtain high profile jobs. When students are leaders, doors of opportunity open through the relationships they build and through the people they have trustworthily led.

As I mentioned above, student leaders have stretched themselves enabling them to grow and they have also gained valuable networking connections through their diligent efforts to lead others. As students stretch themselves and gain connections these students become better leaders themselves. The way students live their lives through college and how they go about their studies is an assimilation of what they will be like in their career. If students stretch themselves striving to improve their leadership skills, then they will create a healthy habit of leadership growth that will carry them through doors of opportunity. When students live their lives as leaders during their college experience, they live their lives as leaders forever.

What does college success mean? Being successful in college is not about the grades received or the degree obtained, being successful in college is about increasing your knowledge by stretching yourself, networking to build strong professional relationships, and increasing your capabilities as a leader. Overall, being successful in college is about developing as leaders of the future.
