My Drive for Success by Marina - February 2021 Scholarship Essay

My overall educational goal is to become a Healthcare Administrator, specifically as an Executive Director at a continuing care facility. I am already dual enrolled in the MBA 4+1 program at Florida Southern College. Then I hope to apply and receive a job in my chosen path.
To me success is making a difference in the lives of all mine touch. I have always enjoyed helping people, and community service has been an intrinsic part of my life rather than something I do in isolation or for credit. Watching doctors help others has always fascinated me. Ever since I was little, I have enjoyed attending doctor’s appointments with my parents. At home, especially when my Daddy wasn’t feeling well or had cut himself, I would pretend to be a doctor and help him by getting him an icepack, applying a Band-Aid, checking his temperature, etc. When I was a bit older I started exploring different medical field specialties; however, I soon realized I really didn’t want to deal with a lot of blood or gore. I didn’t know how to pursue my medical industry dreams without being a doctor, but then I found healthcare administration. The research and experience gained through my endeavors affirmed my desire, and I have set my heart to becoming a radiologist.
Another driving factor to ensure my success was a personal experience. A few years ago my Godmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent chemotherapy, multiple surgeries including a double mastectomy, and finally was proclaimed cancer free. Since her mother had died from the same diagnosis, I was very scared for her during her treatments; and when she was told she was cancer-free, I rejoiced. I do not want to see other breast cancer patients suffer the way she did, and I know there are many women who lose their lives to breast cancer. My inspiration drives me to also advocate for women’s health in addition to becoming a continuing care director. It comes out of love, sadness, and lots of prayers.
