Thinking Positively by Mariana - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

Thinking Positively
For many students the first year of college can be overwhelming, and hard to handle. Students may start to begin to think negatively which can really affect them academically, I know from first-hand experience. My first semester was difficult, as a collegiate athlete I was struggling with my grades. I was getting so frustrated, overwhelmed, and wanted to give up. I developed a negative attitude, where I just didn’t want to go to class, and I didn’t see the point of trying to study anymore, I felt like it wouldn’t help. Towards the end of the semester I felt defeated and realized having a bad attitude was going to get me nowhere. All I did was whine and groan, but that wasn’t going to fix my grade. I needed to do something about my grades and I knew the first step was changing my attitude. Throughout finals I made it a mission of mine to keep a good head on my shoulder, and focus on how I could improve. With my attitude check I ended the semester with a 3.0 GPA.
Now I have made it a New Year’s resolution of mine to start being positive every day to help me as a student. Thinking positively will help me to focus in school in many different ways, it will teach me to look at situations and approach things in a new way. I am hopeful that positive thinking will open new doors. My negativity may have changed my grades but I can only imagine the wonderful outcome it will have for me if I try to stay positive my second semester of college. I am still learning and will hopefully develop more ways to become a better student throughout time and not just make them my New Year’s resolutions.
