Be A Leader by Mariana - December 2021 Scholarship Essay
When you think of a leader some of the qualities you might think of are inspiration, responsibility, strategies, the list goes on & on. I believe that a great leader is flexible in many different situations. I believe I carry this trait on an everyday basis.
I definitely consume myself in this trait because I constantly am facing problems, that I will have to adapt to, which in a way, makes me such a great leader. In my life, I’ve faced many hardships especially when it comes to my surrounding health problems. My health problems give me these challenges because constantly my vision is always changing from bad to good, good to bad. These struggles happen both in school & out of school. Struggles from crossing the street, going upstairs, or reading the board in school. These are some of the struggles I face on a weekly basis from the constant change.
In school, my freshman year, I changed schools halfway through the year. This was definitely a big change for me because I went to a school of approximately a thousand students to one maybe triple that amount. Some people might’ve said that it would be a really rough patch for me to go through, along with all the health problems I face on a daily basis. I believe it wasn’t a rough patch for me, though I perceived through this hardship, & I was flexible throughout the whole situation. This new school was something I’d never faced before because I’d never lived in a place with this big of a population. I’ve thrived in this environment, I’ve learned so many skills including, my most adaptive skills, self-advocacy. I’ve believed being a self-advocate for myself is going to help me in the future with more advanced schooling & in my career field.
Being a self-advocate has intertwined with being flexible in school. For example, this school year at our school we faced a downfall in our internet. In my situation, everything I do is online when it comes to school: my tests, my homework, & how I access all of my materials in class. In some cases, I witness, there were students thinking this was a time, were using the excuse, none of the students can’t do anything because our society has believed that we aren’t able to do anything with technology. In my instance, I knew I was going to struggle, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me from excelling in my academics. Even though the situation wasn’t very flexible I came up with a way to become flexible. I was learning ways to enlarge the paper, asking teachers for more help in classes, & making sure the technology I did have access to was helping me in my schoolwork. This could’ve been an instance, where I decided, I don’t need to do any work, because I can’t access any of my materials, but I wanted to make it a positive & perceive through this experience.
Leaders are able to be flexible & adapt to new situations. I believe I convey this on a daily basis and will continue to be doing so, throughout my life. Being able to be flexible is going to open up so many doors.
