Cooking and Baking: a Subject in Health by Maranda - August 2015 Scholarship Essay

If a class was to be added to the American curriculum, I believe it should be a cooking and baking course. In this subject, students would learn not only about how the foods they eat effect their body, but also on how to prepare and serve a balanced and nutritious meal.

Students today are often unaware of how the greasy food that they are eating can hurt their body. Fast food and microwavable meals may be convenient while living life on a fast paced schedule, but eating it day in and day out is not a good choice for one's overall health. Eating a fatty and greasy diet can promote many health issues both while students are young and in their future.

One may argue that these topics are covered in health and biology courses. Though not only would this cooking course teach students the importance of healthy food to their overall health, but would also teach them how to prepare the food themselves. They would learn the basics of baking and cooking with healthy foods, how to work with measurements, and the chemistry behind how the foods work together. Students would be able to let their creativity show in trying new thing while also following the basic instructions. Teachers would show students the proper way to set a table and also how to be a hospitable host. Most importantly, a student would be shown that not all foods that are labled healthy are disgusting and have a great impact in their overall health.
