Student Advisory Council by Mara - November 2019 Scholarship Essay
As part of the Student Advisory Council (SAC), there are multiple goals being part of the council. Our main goal is to work together to try to satisfy the needs/wants of everyone attending our school. It’s especially important to listen to all sides of an argument or issue in order to resolve problems in the best way possible. I know not everyone can be pleased, but we try our very best to ensure the greatest number of people are satisfied with what we stand by in our handbook. Another goal is to give back to our high school community. Carroll High School has given students so much while attending, such as new friends and a good education. This is the first year the Student Advisory Council has been part of our high school, so we are currently focusing on revising the student handbook in order to match what Carroll High School stands by and represents.
Through the council, I am able to make an impact in my high school community. There are some rules in the handbook that many people disagree with or do not follow, but I am able to help improve those rules by working with others. One example is the idea of uniforms. People are upset that certain sweatshirts are able to be worn, and other sweatshirts are not, even with our logo on it. We have been able to convince the principal to consider other options for students to wear. As soon as next semester, there is the possibility of making more uniform options available. By coming up with a solution to the problem, there is the satisfaction of knowing I am helping to improve the student body's experience at school. Along with this satisfaction, there is also the thought of knowing I am affecting the future handbook in a positive way.
Carroll High School is a great place to be, and with the SAC, it grows to be even better. Every student has something they wish they could have a say in or improve, and I am able to be the bigger voice for each student. There is the ability to form the student body into what the students and handbook envisioned. While I may only be able to serve the council for one year, being that this is my last year of high school, I'm ensuring that I make a serious impact before I leave. I'm able to guarantee that I am helping not only the current students but also future students at Carroll High School.
