Wave to Success ! by Makayla - October 2019 Scholarship Essay
In July of 2016 , My parents decided to make the move from The Bahamas to North Carolina . Coming from a small beautiful blue tropical island into a country town populated with people way different than myself in ways I thought never existed made it hard to focus. For the first time , not having my sister to help me and keep me through school I was left with just with my parents while my sister studied away for 4 years.
In August of 2016 to June 2018 , I was faced with many bullying and harassment issues within my school based off of my Bahamian accent and how different I looked. I was faced with emotional and verbal bullying problems from males and females at my school . Many have asked how have you dealt with this and how I kept going ?, truth is it was hard being faced with many obstacles and not wanting to come to school everyday because of being scared of what people were gonna say to me was hard.
In August 2018, I moved to a new school. At this new school , it was GREAT! I made friends easy , I could walk around school with a smile on my face and be happy to learn for once. I was placed in American History 1 class with maybe about 12 students, being able to express myself and show my academic ability was something I never thought I could be able to do again. Moving to this new school gave me the ability to express myself in different ways and be able to learn better without any distractions and continue to boost my grades and soon apply for college.
Overall, I would say the teachers and students inspired me to strive for academic success. As John Wooden said " Things work out best for those who make the best of how things work out" . As I listened and used all the helpful resources I could at this new school , I have more opportunities for greatness now inside and outside of the classroom . DON'T FORGET " Work hard in silence and let success be your noise" - Frank Ocean
