Success as a Pathway to Changing the World by Makaela - February 2021 Scholarship Essay
I love animals. There is no rhyme or reason behind this, I cannot explain it any more than I can explain why my dog is under the illusion the cats’ food tastes better than her own. However, this passion is integral to my being, and motivation behind my life and career goals. I want to become an animal lawyer to protect the animals that mean so much to mean. The sweet little cat who sits down and snuggles on my lap when I am stressed. The dog who jumps up in excitement because I am home after a hard day at school. So success in college would be when my education provides me with the tools towards this goal.
Success means more than a degree, though that is important. Without it I would not be able to attend law school, become an animal lawyer and further move on to hopefully make an impact in animal rights. It also means that I obtain the skills and experience also necessary to make such an impact. High school was successful for just this reason. An easy example is the improvement in my writing skills. My previous style reflected a belief that I needed to repeat my main point an unnecessary amount of times to get it across. Changing such a small point greatly improved all of my later essays. I also advanced far enough in math that I was able to self-study a higher math curriculum. I did not have the usual explicit pacing provided by the teacher and so I had to develop and maintain both good time management and pacing skills. In the end I completed both of the two textbooks worth of material by the end of the year. A similar advancement in college would be a success.
Experience is also important for learning such skills and necessary for any success in college. The recent global pandemic has made this more difficult, but I am already working towards it. Even though we have been limited to meeting over zoom I have still been able to volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America as a Big Sister. Where I have been working to plan activities and growing in my communication skills, especially while dealing with children. CurrentlyI am even applying for a remote internship for the summer with the Human Society. Current events have made it more difficult but I am still working to gain the necessary experience to make college a success.
College is a critical step in the pathway towards making the difference in the world I want to see and help the animals I love so dearly. It is a success to me when it allows me to move further down this pathway by providing the ample skills and experience.
