Earn The Impossible by Maidoua - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
“The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.” ~ Vince Lombardi
My father had an education, and earned his degree to help to provide for our family. He worked for a business and sat in an office getting paid a salary. My mother has no education, and was constantly working just as hard to provide for our family. She worked for a small local business and sat in an assembly line and got paid hourly.
I am one of the oldest in our family of seven, and the moment I started elementary school my mother has told me “Study hard, work hard so you can have a better life.” I didn’t understand what those words meant until I headed off to complete my four years in high school. Everyone knows the responsibilities that the oldest one must carry as they age. You can’t fall short and must make the family proud, it can get heavy on the shoulders but I remember why I must do it.
After High School, I said to myself “I’m just going to work instead of college” and continued on with part-time jobs to help to provide for my family. Almost four years later, I am constantly asking myself “Is this enough? Am I content with the life I have, the job I have, or can I do even better?” I’ve been given the opportunity to work many versatile jobs like retail, to bakery and now hospitality. What I found was my service to my customers and guests was very important and I wanted to make that into a career, and I definitely could but it wouldn’t be at the level that I have set for myself. The only choice was to attend college.
So here I am about to attend college for the next four years in International Business. Keeping both my full-time and part-time jobs along with earning this bachelors I hope to drain every inch of information I will learn from real hand experience at work to know how it works from the books and classes.
After college, I want to open myself up and go outside the box, outside the U.S. in particular. It has been a long stretched dream of mine to work full-time in Asia, especially in the Entertainment industry. Asian music and its culture has sparked an interest here in the United States for performers and artists to come over. I want to use my degree and involve myself in the communication bridge that both sides have created and I want to strengthen it even more. To better connect our worlds and our language for the viewers who are listening, who have been listening and who will join later on.
Taking my parent’s education and lifestyle, I think about my own education and future history. I now understand my mother’s words “Study hard, work hard so you can have a better life.” And it wouldn’t have been attainable without going to college, that I can guarantee.
