What makes a good leader? by Maggie - December 2021 Scholarship Essay
The key to being a good leader is to have good personal qualities. Such qualities would be the ability to delegate, communicate, empathize, and have integrity. A good leader is not just about being confident and strong-minded, but about having passion, decision-making skills, and communicating effectively. People need a leader they can trust to guide them and make decisions on their behalf. Without these things, values, beliefs, and trust can be lost.
A solid leader needs the ability to delegate because there are many important jobs that need to be taken care of, however, a leader can not do all things. A leader needs the skill of discernment to properly delegate tasks to others. Delegation can be a powerful trust-building tool as well. People are sounder when a trusted leader assigns someone to a task, they feel they can trust them too.
Communication is a desirable skill in most aspects of life, but especially in the position of power as a leader. Effective communication skills will bring peace among the people and the leader because what is going on is clearly understood. Communication is an absolute must for a leader.
Empathy is important when deciding on a leader because people want someone who can empathize with where they are at and coming from. Empathy leads to a better understanding of the people’s feelings, wants, and needs. Empathy is a valuable trait allowing the leader to put himself in the position of his people and appreciate them.
Lastly, integrity is important because it facilitates trust among their people. They can understand the truth and stand behind it and what is right. Integrity fosters loyalty in the nature that if it is shown that the person has morals and principles and stands upon them, then they can be followed without a waiver of doubt.
Being a good leader takes a good mixture of many qualities. A leader cannot run a one-man show nor can they ignore the needs of those they serve. A leader must be someone of high standard, sharpness, and trustworthiness. A leader is someone that faith can be put into and action, in turn, comes out.
