The Importance of Leadership in College and Beyond by Madison - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Success in a collegiate atmosphere requires the development of a number of inherent skills. The obvious ones include organization, time management, motivation, and readiness to learn. However, one of the skills I feel is often overlooked by parents, teachers, and students alike, is leadership. Leadership is a crucial and necessary skill to develop and implement to be successful in college and in a professional, postgraduate setting.

Throughout college, students are faced with numerous obstacles. These obstacles require students to take the responsibility to be a leader and figure out what is needed to overcome the obstacle, whether this is in a group setting or not. It is also just as important for a leader to learn when leadership skills are necessary. It is great in a group setting to have one student become the leader, but this can hurt the other students if the leader takes charge of all tasks. Therefore, learning the correct leadership skills is extremely important to college success.

Not only are leadership skills important to acquire to be successful in college, but are also important to be successful in a professional, postgraduate setting. Students need to learn these skills in college, so they will be ready for their jobs after college is over. When employers are looking to hire a new employee, leadership skills are one of the main qualities they look for. A professional has to be able to be a leader and take control of their work and is absolutely necessary for success.

No matter what setting a person is in, leadership is a great quality to acquire and retain. Students with leadership skills will have a greater chance of succeeding in college and long after college throughout their professional life. Leadership is necessary.
