What class in school do you think deserves more emphasis? by Madison - November 2021 Scholarship Essay
Growing up is hard. There are so many pressures: school, sports, friends, family and health. Sometimes when we put so much time and effort into one thing, we can lose sight of other things. While not intentional, sometimes we find ourselves slipping in one area to better that of another. I think it can be hard to prioritize time, therefore I think it would be beneficial to have a class based on balance. Mental health is really the foundation of success. When you feel good, good things come. When you surround yourself with goals and tools to achieve those goals, you have better success. Foe example, while I know I should get good grades to get a good job, if I am not sure who to ask for help or how to go about organize my time to obtain those grades, then I won’t be successful. If I know that working out leads to better health and fitness, but I don’t have a schedule that allows me to get to the gym before they close, then that fitness I once longed for is simply that…a longing.
We all know that mental health is something that has long-been overlooked. Luckily for me, I have outside resources that help me navigate tough times. My family is always open and honest. I have a few of my best friends that I can rely on for advice. But wouldn’t it be nice to have other resources in school? Tools in my tool-belt that I could pull out when things are not going as planned. I would love for schools to be able to offer more of that. Honestly, I think all of us could benefit from a class related to balance and strategies to maintain that balance.
