Adult Life as a Hobby by Madison - September 2019 Scholarship Essay

College applications, wholesome recreation, or even just for fun - extracurricular activities. "Which one best fits me?" and, "What looks good on paper?" Are two questions every high school student is trying to figure out the answer to when figuring out what to join. Most peoples' minds go to something like sports or an established student body group. Although these options are healthy, social, and entertaining, there's actually one extracurricular activity that should be the common "norm" in each high school - Adult Life.

To start off, the idea of what that club would exactly be has to be explored. Not only would it be a fun, social activity, this after school meet-up would essentially consist of a bunch of kids meeting up and practice doing not only life skills that they'll need in college, but future-life perspectives and outlooks. Some of the activities students can do are things like learning how to change a tire, learning how and what to meal prep for the week, and cost-efficient ways to live. "Basic life skills are on the endangered list, with fewer young adults able to perform simple tasks like sorting their laundry or ironing a shirt, and it’s a disturbing trend that’s only getting worse," was stated in an article by Anna Taylor in The Daily Telegraph. With skills like the few listed previously, college and young adult living will be a snap for the average Joe.

As previously said, it would give students an opportunity to get a foot on the ground before they actually step into the real world without any experience. "Life is funny. No one gets a handbook upon turning 18, complete with all the rules they'll need to memorize and competencies they'll need to acquire. Somehow you're just supposed to know that you should have more money coming in than going out and you shouldn't wear a fuzzy orange sweater to a job interview," states Shana Lebowitz, author of the online article from Indpendent, '31 Life Skills Every Functioning Adult Should Master.' While some things are just common sense, there are definetely some skills that are so basic, the thought of actually having to know how to do some of them independently is a scary and intimidating thought. Having time and space to voluntarily learn these things would be such a help.

To conclude, an extra curricular activity for higher level students should be something that focuses on Adult Life. It would be a great and entertaining use of time, helpful for incoming college freshman, and will give students an opportunity to have a better understanding about basic life skills. Countless of high schoolers would love to work with this idea at their own schools.
