A Free Tutor by Madeline - November 2019 Scholarship Essay
Throughout high school, I have helped my school in many ways, most importantly in proofreading essays, answering questions, and helping my peers with their homework. Many other students don't care to help others, and feel like by helping, they are "wasting" their less-than-abundant free time. I feel differently about this. Helping others with schoolwork not only helps them, but it also reinforces my own understanding of the topics.
One of my favorite ways to help my peers is by proofreading their college application essays. It's a special type of exchange, because we are encouraged to show our personalities, likes and dislikes as much as possible in these types of essays. Oftentimes, the people whose essays I read aren't close friends of mine, so I enjoy the experience of getting to know them better.
Specifically in chemistry class, I used to help my classmates with molar conversions quite often, and in return they would help me when I struggled to understand a topic. It created a noteworthy learning environment. Oftentimes, when a student asked a question in that class, the teacher wasn't the one to answer. Each student helped in some way to contribute to our collective knowledge.
I have contributed to my school environment in many ways, especially by assisting in essay proofreading and homework. By creating a nurturing learning environment, I can promote a positive change within my school system.
