Bittersweet Event by Madeline - February 2017 Scholarship Essay

My freshman and sophomore year at Appleton North High School were my most difficult years academically. At that time most kids aren't thinking about college or how their grades can affect them in the future. The lesson learned my junior year will forever change my outlook on life.
I was never an outstanding student when it came to math. Usually I just tried to get a passing grade, not actually do the homework, and wing the tests. The two years I was more concerned about my social life rather than my academics. My freshman year math grade ended up being a D at the end of the year. My sophomore year math grade ended up being a B+, because I had to retake in summer school after receiving a D for the previous grade. Going into my junior year college started becoming a frequent topic. Kids started thinking about how well they would have to do on the ACT to get into college and what grades would go along with that. I was yet again faced with my most difficult subject being my 6th hour class. My teacher was the same one as my freshman year. As the year started I made the choice to get very involved with my school work. My teacher offered to let me come in during a time period called IE for extra help. I took advantage of being able to work in depth with my teacher and have her work with me side by side to ask explains problems I didn't understand. I started to figure out that if you put effort into getting the grades you strive for, then eventually you will be able to achieve it. After learning this lesson my grades have improved in every class I'm taking. I now am in two AP class's and my GPA is 3.5. I'm always thankful for have had such an understanding teach would put in her time to help me achieve my academic goal. From learning this lesson I'm more focused on school and receiving all the help I can get to getting a good education.
