A Healthy Life by Madalyn - March 2017 Scholarship Essay

I would love to give a speech to schools all around America about living a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle is crucial to not only being healthy in the physical sense, but also mentally. By eating healthy and exercising—at least three days a week—one's mood will drastically change. Also, getting the proper amount of sleep is vital to living a healthy lifestyle! I believe it is paramount to be healthy because one will live longer and healthier to do the things you aspire to do most in life. I feel like I would be a fantastic spokesperson for presenting this speech because I do live a healthy and active lifestyle; I really enjoy trying to encourage others to be healthy and I love inviting my peers to come to the gym with me. I grew up in a healthy household with parents that have taught me to importance of eating right and being active. My favorite activities are volleyball, snowboarding, hiking, boxing, and rock climbing.
My speech would first outline what a healthy lifestyle consists of—getting the right nutrients, getting the proper amount of sleep, and putting together a exercising plan—as the introduction. Therefore, getting the right nutrients—especially for adolescents and young adults—is very important because a lack of proper nutrition can lead to many serious health defects like anemia, scurvy, and rickets. I feel like it may be out of some children’s reach to eat a certain way because not all parents care about what their children consume. And that’s, again, why I would enjoy to reach out to teenagers and young adults to take charge of their own lives and make it their responsibility to become healthy individuals.
Exercise is also crucial to one’s health and especially if one wants to live longer. It is evident what the physical effects of exercise are but it also has an important mental aspect to it. Exercise is stress reliever by channeling one’s negative energy into something that will make someone feel good about themselves; thus, directing lending to how exercise helps one’s self-esteem. When an individual feels excellent, their whole mantra and day is flipped around.
I would then proceed to talk about a healthy sleep schedule; most of my friends do not get a healthy amount of sleep each night. When individuals, especially growing teenagers, lack the proper amount of sleep it effects one’s mental and physical health. The lack of sleep will damage one’s cognitive abilities and emotional state; also, the lack of sleep will physically put so much stress on one’s heart resulting in high blood pressure, heart disease, and even stoke. Thus, sleep is a main contributor to living a healthy lifestyle.
Living a healthy life style means various factors contribute to it, but I believe everyone should be trying their best to achieve a healthy life style and I would love to inform and inspire people to do so!
