Racism: Lessons For Many by Mackenley - March 2017 Scholarship Essay

Many individuals, such as myself, and others to follow, are born into world believing that is was plain and simple. In the beginning, I thought I was born into a society where everyone was absolutely kind to one another, and were able to accept one another, regardless of their differences. I thought that individuals were not "judged by the color of their skin, but through the content of their character", as Martin Luther King once said. Sadly, it reminds of a quote from William Shakespeare, saying "it is a tale told by an idiot signifying nothing, and I see this dilemma every time walk to school every morning. If I were to speak among my fellow colleagues, all of them in a school wide setting, it would be about the dangers of racism and how we could change it, for I rather have a world built on love and peace, then through absolute pain and hatred.

In order to talk about this important topic, one needs to understand what it is in its entirety. Racism is the idea that one race is more superior than the other. The problem with this way of thinking is that it creates this stigma that the value of once's race is lesser than the other. It promotes that idea that one is allowed to look down upon another and not care about the social and emotional damage that for many years have been inflicted upon others. In my eyes, there is no such thing as a superior race, that everyone is created equal. I believe we are all human beings trying to find happiness in a world that already has its own struggles as it is.

I would give a speech regarding racism among individuals so I could educate the next generation of individuals about this dangerous ideologue and preserve the teachings of love over hatred. This way of thinking has been around for a very long time, and it is a driving force that doesn't plan on stopping anytime soon. With that in mind, I believe that we need to inspire to make a change so that the next generation for follow. As the old saying goes, "children are the future", for they care the hopes and dreams of those before them, and to teach to be hateful towards one another, especially due to the fact that one comes from different backgrounds, would be unforgivable failure.

Racism is never a laughing matter. It is a serious topic that holds so much negativity and can affect those it is directed towards. I would bravely speak among my fellow man because it takes one person to stand up against something that's wrong. I believe the world is ready for a change that it beneficial for all people. And if I were to communicate among a large sum of individuals, I hope that lesson they learned was that of compassionate and a connection among people of many different forms, instead of the other way around.
