The root of Success by Mabri - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in “2014, some 21 million students [were] expected to attend American colleges and universities” but, “fewer than 40% [will] graduate within four years”. Though the majority of students don’t graduate within 4 years of enrollment, the ones that do graduate, have self-discipline and some sort of leadership skills set. Leadership skills are imperative the success of college students because they promote future accomplishment, create an engaging learning environment, and to introduce a flamboyant personality.
First of all, leadership gives students a skills set that further promotes success outside of school, making education even more beneficial. By using leadership qualities, students are forced to cooperate with others while being respectful and trustworthy. Not only is leadership being able to lead others, but also finding a way to be lead. Every single person needs to work well on a team. Working as a team is used in many careers. With the understanding and practice of leadership, students are able to put to use what they learned in the classroom.
Secondly, leadership skills are important for the success of college students because they create an engaging learning environment. If students are encouraged to act as leaders, they are more likely to act those out. Some of these actions may include, being prepared for classes or asking for additional help. Students will learn to take initiative and live up to their personal expectations while also setting a good example for other students to follow along. If other students see someone stepping up and being a leader, they will follow in the leaders’ footsteps creating a good learning environment to the student as well as his/ her fellow students.
Last but not least, leadership skills show themselves important through the granting of colorful personalities. Whether an introvert or extrovert, each human being has their own personality. Through leadership skills, students are able to express themselves in the way that they see fit. Leaders all tell people to believe in themselves and what they can do. With this view, people can have more self-confidence and are able to do things that make them happy as well as help others easily. With confidence, things get done faster and tend to be more efficient. With leadership skills, student are able to express themselves how they see fit, adding to the overall productivity of school.
Leadership skills are imperative the success of college students because they promote future accomplishment, create an engaging learning environment, and to introduce a colorful personality. Amy Hawkins, a researcher at Purdue University, says, “Participation in student organizations can lead to the development of social and leadership skills, higher retention rates, heightened self-confidence, improved satisfaction with college, the ability to see course curriculum as more relevant, and further success after college.” Ms. Hawkins perfectly states the view that I have on the correlation between leadership and success.
