The Help by Kathryn Stockett by Luz - May 2017 Scholarship Essay

A novel that has inspired me is The Help by Kathryn Stockett. The major reason is because of the main theme of the book. It is trying to teach you about the racism that has gone on, and the hardships colored people went through. While giving in detail how the maids get mistreated, whether it is subtle or deliberate, you can get a sense of how they feel. You can feel the attitudes that come from the characters, which range from rebellious to obedient.
It was eye opening for me, reading about how many obstacles were thrown at the maids for no reason. I was either laughing, crying, or down right angry throughout the entire book. It inspired me to be more open minded. Many characters in the book were narrow minded or conformed to the opinions of the women who were thought as powerful.
The novel was honest, which made it more realistic. You were able to hear the voice of the unheard. The author was able to make more of an impact by giving every maid a different personality, as well as every boss. Not all maids felt a sense of hatred towards their bosses. In a way, some felt like they had a connection with them; and not every boss acted in a hostile manner towards their maids. You could even say that some loved them. The way that some of the hardships going on in the novel felt relatable, made the book that much more inspiring. I enjoyed the happy ending, because it gave me a sense of hope. That there is not all bad in this world.
The book itself impacted me in a positive way, as I am sure it did for others. It showed the truth about the past, and it has impacted our future. That is what writing a book is all about. I felt like laughing, crying, and fussing in the span of five pages. Reading how strong and confident the maids were, made me want to strive to be the same way. They had so many hardships thrown their way, and they did not let it knock them down. It was inspiring and heartwarming to know that people can be like that.
