No Service is Insignificant by Lucy - August 2021 Scholarship Essay
When serving others, some say that they do it for a feeling of having done something good- that they gain a sense of purpose when volunteering. Helping others and the community brings a natural sense of accomplishment and this leads to having a better attitude. Some believe that in order to truly help, they must have a larger scale service project. However, this is incorrect since all service is significant and is great in the sight of those they serve.
The service club I am a part of created a service project to buy and donate baby supplies to the Pioneer Relief Nursery in Pendleton, Oregon. A group of high school students went to our local Walmart and purchased diapers, wipes, etc. and then we met a few days later to drive to the relief center and drop them off. On the way there it did not seem like we were doing something extraordinary- we were just driving supplies to a relief center. Yet, the woman that took our donations was more grateful than I would have thought possible. She went on and on about how what we did for them was extremely amazing.
I was able to contribute to my community that day. Although it was not some large project that took hours and hours of work, it served others and helped those in need. This service project made me realize and understand that to serve others, you do not have to have a grand plan, you just have to look for where there are needs. No service is insignificant and everyone can volunteer in some way. For me, doing this smaller service project impacted my view of how I can serve people. Often we do not realize that there are countless service opportunities put in our path everyday. Once we understand that service does not have a size, we can serve more than once a day.
