Education Is Change by Lucero - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

When I asked the people around me to answer this question they all thought of education on an institutional level, I prefer to observe education under another definition, which is an enlightening experience. In this sense, education is meant to inspire change and help us grow. Learning in and out of the classroom prepares us with the skills necessary to change the world.

Before there were ever establishments for teaching, education already existed. Things as simple as learning to walk and talk have made a significant impact in our lives. From the discovery of fire to the creation of 3D printing, mankind has used knowledge and experience to change the way we live. Learning about our surroundings and the way things work have inspired life-changing inventions. Whether the education we receive is from a textbook or from interacting with others, it all leads to one ultimate decision: what do we do with what we know?

From the time we are born to the time we pass away, humans are always learning. We learn the basic motor skills early in our lives and as we age we continue to develop our social and emotional skills. These skills are improved by interacting with the people around us and learning how to communicate with them. By educating ourselves this way we make decisions based on how things affect the world around us and with this mindset we are able to make decisions that will improve life. Interacting with others teaches us to take them into consideration and when paired with and institutional education can make an extraordinary impact.

At school we first learn the basic means of communication: reading and writing. Once we understand these and use them regularly we can delve deeper into the more complex subjects. Analyzing literature, performing scientific experiments, and reading about history all open our minds to change. By learning how things happen and how things were in the past we are able to make decisions on whether or not things should stay the same. By implementing this education in our lives we make decisions to end prejudice and find cures for horrible diseases.

Whether our education is institutional or from life experience does not change its purpose. Gaining knowledge and experience is meant to make an impact in our lives. What we learn is not meant to just sit in the back of our minds; instead we must take it and turn it into something great. Everyone makes decisions on a daily basis that are influenced by things they have heard or experienced in the past. The education we receive is a tool in shaping the future. If we understand the information given to us we can make the choice to change or improve it.

Education is a wonderful thing that should not be limited to the confines of a classroom. Any form of learning is crucial to human development. If we never learned we would never change. This is why it is so important that we realize there are educational opportunities everywhere. Everything we know can make an impact on tomorrow, which is why we try to know as much as we can. Education is offered abundantly in order to ensure that humankind can always make improvements in the world.
