Education is the Key to Succes by Lourdes - December 2014 Scholarship Essay
I can’t remember how many times I have been told that education is the key to success. My mother and father have continuously reminded me of this and I am grateful for it. Through the course of my family history not one of my family members has attended college. My own parents did not finish elementary school so how could they ever dream of going to college. My parents did not finish school not because they did not want to, but because they did not have the resources or financial help to do so. Both of my parents were born in Guatemala and their childhood was a difficult one. They walked mile everyday just to go to school and were taken out of school because their parents were unable to afford it. From the day they were pulled out of school they helped their parents by working and harvesting corn. This is why they have always told me to excel in school, so that one day I will attend college and so that will not have to endure what they endured. With the mindset of education being the key to success and with the dream of one day attending college I have done as my parents advised me to do, which is to put education as the number one priority in my life. I have worked very hard and put my best effort in school.
Education has shaped who I am. Education has given me the key to better not only my life, but my family’s life. Education has also opened my eyes to the outside world, before taking a Human Geography class I didn’t really pay attention to what was going on in the rest of the world. My Human Geography teacher urged all of the students in his class, including myself, to stay up to date with what is happening around the world and I have done so. Human Geography is one of the classes that led me to realize what I want to do with my life, I want to help others. I hope to one day become a Nurse Practitioner and work with Doctors Without Borders or a similar organization, so yes I can say that education has shaped who I am. Not only has education shaped who I am today but it has also shaped who I want to be.
