The Teacher who Changed my Perspective by Lindsay - July 2014 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my high school years, there have been teachers who are incredible and those who are not as good. During my junior year, I had a teacher that had changed my perspective as a student. I have always been a student that does all of the work assigned and who does not slack off. School had always been somewhat easy for me, however this class made me work and push myself to limits that I had never been pushed too in the past.

This class was a honors history class. I had never loved history. In fact, it was the subject that I never liked and was my worst class. The teacher I had was known to be a hard grader and required the students to do a lot of work. At the beginning of the year, I was upset that I had this teacher and was jealous of my friends who had the easier teacher. By the end of the year that had changed. Throughout the year, my teacher had us take notes for homework that were over five or six pages long. Some nights I would spend three or four hours just on that one class. However, each day I would be excited to go to his class.

By the end of the year, I was sad to leave his class. He made me love history and pay attention everyday in class. I have never learned so much in a class. His enthusiasm towards history and the topics we were discussing made it hard for the students in that class to dislike history. My teacher made learning about the history of our country fun. Each day we would leave that class wanting to know more. I believe that in our school systems, we need more teachers like him, teachers that inspire kids to want to learn more and who want their students to succeed and do well. I am extremely grateful that I had him as my teacher and I believe that with great teachers, students become inspired and have a greater chance of success in the future.
