College success skill by Linden - September 2014 Scholarship Essay
What is success in college? Getting the best grades? Or the high score on exams and assignments? Doing well academically is a necessary part of education; it demonstrates that one is able to apply what was taught to a set of scenarios. Doing well academically however, means nothing if you’re unable to convert all those high scores into the career of your dreams.
Being able to communicate and interact with people from different backgrounds is crucial. Whether you’re in the health care field, technology, marketing, financial or public service sector, unless you can express your ideas effectively, you might as well be your own island. As fast as technology is expanding, hardware still doesn’t make decisions on who to hire, who to assign a project, who to carefully review audits; people make the final decisions. We have to learn how to work with others to achieve a common goal, produce the best outcome, or come up with the best strategies. Sometimes this means working with individuals we don’t always get along with, but by putting differences aside, you’re able to work together and accomplish tasks that technology can’t.
Modern advances are aided by technology, but people working together with ideas and desires are what actually accomplish things. Learning a technical skill from books or a college professor isn't hard for most people. Learning how to interact with appropriate emotion, tact and character comes from experience and thoughtful action.
