Necessary Debate by Lily - June 2025 Scholarship Essay
Why do current societal standards allow violence to decide the outcome of an argument? The future rests upon our ability to defend and uphold our beliefs the right way. Today, there is unrest, violence, and a lack of trust among populations. Given that our generation is incapable of debating one another without harmful effects. I believe each school should require a debate class to prepare each individual for their future.
In many countries, protests occur daily. They are anything but formal. Large crowds of people gathered to “argue” for their rights. A protest is a loud and unorganized argument among hundreds or even thousands of people. The majority of protests include multiple violent acts against people and their livelihoods. They disrupt innocent lives. By requiring a debate class, individuals would be presented with the opportunity to learn the proper way to argue. Arguing their rights but doing so in a calm and poised manner. Debates get heated yet never take such an extensive step as to incorporate violence. In a formal dispute, one can advocate for what they believe and not worry about their safety. Requiring debate class would equip students with the proper tools to advocate their rights.
Introducing a debate class would broaden the horizons for many students as well. Making jobs in law more applicable and popular. Society would maintain a firm grasp on politics. Politics would also become more sensible. Multiple disputes being resolved with protests could be solved formally with a debate. This class will allow students to understand tactics and logical ways to win over a crowd.
Debate class is a logical way to help students around the world acquire the ability to defend their beliefs. It would lessen violence and help spread formal arguments. Disagreements would not expand to such magnitudes and people would be safer. The future of logic lies in society's hands. How are we going to contribute?
