What class do you think deserves more emphasis in school and why? by Lily - November 2021 Scholarship Essay
There are many classes in school that are taken for granted due to their lack of emphasis. One class that stands out to me is Home Economics. Many students view Home Economics as “unnecessary” or “boring” but, what most students don’t see is that it is your foundation on life as you enter adulthood.
You wake up one morning and you notice your car has a flat tire. Most Home Economic courses teach “changing a flat tire” within the first weeks of school due to most students eligible for the class is and or will be driving within the next few months of enrollment. Okay, so now you have the flat tire fixed, now you must pay for it. But how? Don’t have cash or a credit card, so you resort to a check. Well without Home Economics courses most students who graduate High School are unable to write out a check or balance a check book. Another example would be, having a hole in your jeans, most would buy a new pair. But with the skill of sewing, taught in Home Economics, you could fix that hole and save the money for more important things such as bills.
After talking with alumni from High School, most regret not taking advantage of Home Economics. Mainly due to lack of familiarity on “making change with money”. “You don’t realize how important that skill is until you work a cash register at a little shop in town”, one student said. Handling finances is a huge part of life once graduating high school, and even before graduation when preparing for college and moving out of your parent’s home on your own. By taking Home Economics courses, students can get a basic “crash course” on life after High School.
I believe if Home Economics was highlighted more in schools that students would graduate High School with a better insight on how to handle difficult situations as they enter adulthood. I personally have taken it upon myself to talk with students in my neighborhood about the Home Economics Course offered at our local High School and hope my words have offered a better understanding of the course and why it is essential for the class to be emphasized more to current students.
