Nonprofit for Earth by Lillian - February 2020 Scholarship Essay

The mission of my nonprofit organization would be to implement a sustainable energy usage model for living on and protecting the Earth. Given that, as of right now, there is only one planet that humanity can live on, protecting Earth is a sensible and worthy goal. Current total energy usage, however, especially in the United States, is not sustainable. We, as a nation and a world, are depleting Earth’s resources faster than they can be replenished, and we may soon run out of nonrenewable resources, like coal and oil. My nonprofit would focus on making both energy production and usage more sustainable, so that we never have to worry about our lights going out for good.

My nonprofit would target energy production and energy use separately. Education is a very important first step to enacting lasting change, so my nonprofit would work to educate households on minimizing energy usage and why doing so is important. Households would benefit from a more individualized approach, and the organization would educate as many people as possible on how to reduce their energy consumption. We could even prepare games to show people how to reduce their energy usage. The second step in my nonprofit’s plan would be to encourage behavioral and actionable changes. Individuals would be encouraged to set up renewable energy sources, like solar panels and wind farms, within their homes and their communities. My nonprofit could help find funding for these projects, so that money is not the obstacle preventing individuals from achieving these goals.

Sustainable energy production could be achieved through the cooperation of the government and energy companies. My nonprofit would act as an interest group, fighting for laws and regulations that support minimizing nonrenewable resource usage, while fighting in the courts against laws that are counterproductive to the mission. We would also negotiate with companies, and try to convince them to become environmentally aware.
