Study Nights for Freshmen by Liberty - November 2019 Scholarship Essay
My senior year of high school I was a Link Leader in Link Crew. Link Crew was a student organization made up of juniors and seniors who lead freshman/new student orientation and many events for freshmen and new students throughout the school year. Each Link Leader gets a group of 5 or 6 freshmen during orientation that we do activities with and give a tour of the school with. Throughout the school year I stayed in contact with my group of freshmen, keeping up with how their classes were going and how they were doing in general.
Right before midterm exams one of my freshmen, we will call her Sarah, told me she was worried that she would not do good on her math exam. She said she was not understanding the material well and she needed help. I decided to ask the rest of my freshmen if any of them needed help studying for midterms and they all had a subject or two that they were worried about. So, I decided to hold a study night one day after school. We all met up at the library by our school and I helped them study and they helped each other.
After that I suggested to the Link Crew advisers that all the Link Leaders should hold a study night once or twice a month after school so we can help our freshmen, or they can help each other, with any classes they may be struggling with. They thought it was a great idea and we started doing study nights twice a month. The feedback we received from the freshmen was incredible. They said it was extremely helpful and that they felt they were doing better in their classes because of the study nights.
Before I graduated, my Link Crew advisers informed me that next year they would continue having the Link Leaders hold study nights twice a month the following school year as many freshmen reported them having a positive impact on their grades.
