Go The Way, Show The Way by Lexis - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Up to this point in a students life we have depended on the guidance of parents, guardians, teachers, and other elders. College is the first time, for many of us, that we will be responsible for leading ourselves.  This means, in large part, we will now be responsible for creating our schedules to master our days: Class times, study time, eating times, working hours, financial responsibilities, as well as, being involved in productive organizations that will provide community service to the surrounding areas of our college. So, yes, I wholeheartedly believe that Leadership Skills is necessary for college success.

I have always been a person who has had very strong opinions about life and the way it’s meant to be lived. In order to keep my strong convictions about the way to achieve success in life, I have realized I can’t be a follower of my peers opinions when they do not correspond to mine.  I believe as John Maxwell said, "A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” It is my desire, to not just be a name on a roll in a classroom, but to go the way, then show the way, as I achieve success.

I am majoring in Psychology to earn a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. I am devoting my life to serving other people. It is my belief that the best type of leadership is servant leadership. Leadership in college is the foundation that I will continue to build on in my future, as I continue to lead and serve others.
