Different Learning Styles by LeVon - January 2015 Scholarship Essay
If I could give a teacher one piece of advice to help me learn, it would be not all students have the same learning style. There are many different styles of learning. Many different learning styles can be utilized when teaching, but not every learning style will be effective for every student. Some learning styles do require more social interaction than others. Each student has a learning style that can help them satisfy their own potential.
Different learning styles are formed by different ways of teaching. A student with a visual learning style means that student learns better with exposure to images. An auditory learning style is met with exposure to sound. If a student responds better to a logical learning style, then they learn better when exposed to reason and reasoning behind a problem. A physical learning style will better help students who work better with objects, rather than concepts and ideas.
When a lesson is being taught in one style, all students in the class might not be able to grasp the concept. Therefore, when teaching a lesson, applying more than one learning style into a lesson may allow a greater amount of students to be able to comprehend the lesson. Many students have more than one style of learning that works well for them. So even though it might not be possible to incorporate every single learning style to every lesson being taught, using multiple learning styles within a lesson will have a greater effectiveness instead of only using one learning style.
There are multiple different learning styles, some of which are more social than others. Some students may learn better in a social environment, while others may be able to learn better in a solitary environment. Group projects may be more effective for some people, but group projects also can have the opposite effect on others. If a person learns better when exposed to solitary learning styles, then they most likely will not respond as well when exposed to more social styles of learning.
All in all, every student has different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to learning. Each and every student in a class has a different personality and a different way to access their own learning potential. Every student's learning potential is high, but if they are not exposed to a learning style which will better benefit them, they may not be able to reach their potential as well as another student. Over all, my advice to a teacher in order to help me learn, would be to respect my own as well as every student's learning style.
