Climate Change: Fact or Myth by Leslie - July 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I were given the opportunity to give a TED Talk, I would center it around the reason we should take global warming seriously. With the United States pulling out of the Paris Accord, it is clear that we do not view climate change as an issue that should be dealt with immediacy. This greatly contrasts Pope Francis’s take on climate change being a major threat. Since data and numbers are not resonating with people, I would not bore them with the alarming statistics that scientists have gathered, I would rather present the issue of climate change with common sense.
Let us speculate that people like President Donald Trump are correct when they say climate change is not a big issue, or real at all, and we still decided to try to counter act it, then the consequence is that we spent money to improve an issue that is not life-threatening. This is not a huge problem, but the United States does not like feeling that we wasted our money. Now, let us say that scientists are correct and climate change is a big issue and is real, but we do nothing about it, the consequences are far more grave. For one we allowed the problem to become greater and possibly irreversible. This places the health of our entire planet at stake. I understand that there are initiatives being taken to possibly inhabit Mars, which should not be condemned, but we should not abandon the care of our planet because all hope is not lost. We need to press to our governments that the sanctity of business and revenue is not more important than the sanctity of the Earth. If we allow our planet to go to ruins, it will be impossible for us to carry out business ventures and make a profit, unless Elon Musk is successful in inhabiting Mars of course.
The Earth is something that all future generations will inherit, money will come and go, but what we do to the Earth now will not last a lifetime because it will last for generations to come. If a doctor tells you that the mole you have on your back is likely to be malignant, you would err on the side of safety by going ahead and having it removed. You would be a fool to disregard the doctor and think that the doctor is incorrect because the consequences can be life-threatening. Climate change is no different, we have qualified scientists telling us that we need to take care of environment, yet we are brushing them off because we assume it is not important. Whether we want to believe that climate change is a fact or myth should not matter, it is better to prevent the Earth from having a premature death due to our current actions. We must collectively realize that allowing the earth to thrive for years to come is priceless. What we do to this Earth will be inherited and we can either work to create a better tomorrow, or hope and pray that climate change is just a hoax.
