Originality Concept by Leonard - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

Upcoming freshman or “fresh fish” as they say it, welcome to high school. Now is the time to make or break how the rest of your life will turn out. The best times can be made if things are done right, especially if you find yourself early. School clubs, social events, activities, and the people around you will help define yourself in the most appropriate manner. The thing to best remember is that high school is a stepping stone that will reflect your inner self based on the people you are around. Athletes hang around athletes, scholars around scholars, and those unsure are left wandering around either content with themselves or not sure what group they belong to. Finding yourself is a simple process that is often avoided, simply stated, it is doing what you want, doing what you have to, avoiding peer pressure, and most of all is to enjoy every moment good or bad.

First of all, do what you want to do. Doing that will ensure the most amount of happiness. Most people enjoy a plethora of things, but they avoid them because of how things may be perceived by the public. The difference of many tastes can vary between feeling rebellious and feeling comfortable with what it is that’s being done. For instance, if reading a book makes you happy, why would avoiding that be a thought just to fit in? Read your book whether alone or in a group, if you are anti-social, then it may develop into a problem. On the other hand, if you can be a social butterfly then briefly separate yourself to dedicate time to reading, you may develop a higher sense of respect in yourself as well as your peers.

In addition and with utmost importance, do what you have to do. Priorities are the main thing in life to pay attention to. With priorities a sense of accomplishment will make you feel good about yourself, as if you are moving in the right direction. Priorities in high school will always be the amount of work you get done. Grades amount to college placement as well as proper career paths and the better the grades, the more opportunities available. Keeping yourself busy is also a priority. It helps maintain proper mental health. Freshman year is the year to establish yourself as a certain individual. Because of the term “fresh fish” or “fresh meat”, bullying of sorts may be applied. Fighting, submissive and dominant individuals are made from this source of growing up. Proper establishment of self is a priority because it can be the reason you are successful.

Furthermore, peer pressure should be avoided as much as possible. That alone can get you into a world of hurt. Peer pressure is the influence from members of one's peer group. Can you imagine doing things that you don’t want to do just because someone else encouraged you to do it? It’s a hassle to think about, but it happens. Peer pressure can drive you from doing what you want to do and stray you away from your priorities. Dangers can be administered into your mind and actions the more you submit to it. Although positive peer pressure is there, your judgment is what matters in your decision.

In conclusion, the best thing for freshman to do is have fun. When you do what you want as well as handle your priorities, avoiding negative peer pressure should be no problem. Having fun is the most accomplished feeling a person can have, especially if everything done prior is in order and everything is handled properly. My advice to freshman is to retain originality. Do everything you can to stand out in your peer group while remaining yourself. If you want to be successful, be yourself doing it so you can be happy. Being yourself is understanding what is going on within the grounds of your mind and relating it to your actions to be satisfied with yourself when everything is said and done. Remember that there is only one of you and with enough practice, time, and effort you can duplicate results in many different situations.
