Gap Year by Lena - August 2019 Scholarship Essay
If I had a gap year, I would like to do some charity work, starting in my own town. I would start by volunteering at habitat of humanity, where I would learn how to build houses for people. Then I would spend time volunteering at a nursing home that my mother works at, even if it is just calling the numbers during bingo or planting flowers around the building. I would really like to also take a trip to the Bahamas and do some charity work there. I went over there on a trip when I was in high school and helped paint a YMCA, and I would really like to go back and see what else I could do.
A gap year would give me a chance to give back to my community. Sure, I would love to travel to underprivileged countries and help them, but I don’t want to neglect what is happening right down the street from my house. I would give all my time trying to do as much community service as I could, just because I had the time to. I believe that doing community service is a great way to build character and give some perspective on life. By helping others in need, it will shed a light on everything that is given to us, even though it may seem like we do not have enough at times, there is always somebody who has less. I just want to make a difference in somebody’s life.
