Grateful for Diversity by Leilanie Perez - November 2020 Scholarship Essay

The aspect of my education I am most thankful for is diversity. The experience of studying alongside friends from all walks of life has an invaluable impact on my academic and social experiences. I am grateful to be exposed to these individuals, who shaped me into a person with cultural sensitivities.
The benefits of diversity in education stretch far and wide. Yearly events, such as Hispanic Heritage month, has exposed me to different cultures and customs. While I am Latina, I can appreciate the Latino community's differences regarding food, language, and traditions. I hope to travel one day the many Latina American countries and experience their individual culture first hand.
Diversity has also provided me an opportunity to be thoughtful about my views and opinions. It challenges predisposed stereotypes that I may have developed during my life. Being surrounded by friends with various opinions about life and politics helps me examine my philosophy through others' lens and ultimately form my personal beliefs with honesty and conviction. While my opinion may ultimately be different, I can work with friends with different views as I can respect their experiences, as well.
I am thankful for interacting with people of various backgrounds because it enables me to learn to communicate more effectively. Diversity prepares students like me to become good citizens in an increasingly complex and divided society. Embracing diversity is essential to prepare students like me to live a full and active life as part of my community.
Diversity has helped define who I am, my motivations, and my perspective on life. I will be eternally grateful that my educators have emphasized the importance of diversity and inclusivity in academics.
