The Purpose of an Education by Leah - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

“Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education.” John F. Kennedy briefly and concisely sums up education’s purpose, importance, and value. Education is not only important to an individual but it is also important to the strength and independence of a nation. Through knowledge and education we are enabled to succeed as individuals, grow as communities, and unite as a nation. Education is the reason we, as a nation can say, E Pluribus Unum. Out of many, one.

My personal experience leads me to say that education has prepared me for the future. My goals for college, career, and life are made possible by the knowledge and skills gained as a student. For centuries, education has been instrumental in an individual’s ability to think independently, be successful in life, and, perhaps even more importantly, achieve their dreams. We grow as individuals, develop character, and become who we are because of the education we receive.

So, what is the purpose of an education? Education’s purpose is to prepare us for the future. Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders, and their qualities and knowledge gained as youth will greatly determine their future. We must continue to support education in its quest to graduate responsible, contributing members of the community who have attained the lifelong values required by the world and society. And because people’s education will in turn affect the workings of a nation, I believe the underlying importance of education to be the impact it has on a nation. Small or great every successful nation is founded by people with a solid, knowledgeable foundation…and therein lays the purpose of education.
