Why Attending College is Important by Lawrence - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
I am someone who has been diagnosed with autism and an intellectual disability. As someone with these disabilities, I think that attending college is not only important but critical in my success as an individual and member of our society. Usually, people with my disabilities choose to not attend college because it is too hard, too expensive, not accessible or too overwhelming. People with these disabilities that don’t continue with school are usually the people who must depend on government assistance, help from their families or communities, or have low-paying jobs that won’t help them live independently.
It is important for me to attend college because I want the opportunity to learn alongside people without disabilities and participate in clubs and sports with them as well. I also want the opportunity to gain additional life skills like making friends, following a schedule, and living in a dorm that will aid me in successfully living independently.
It is also important for me to attend college because a higher education gives me the opportunity to choose the type of career that I want to work in, gives me the information that I need to succeed in that career, and gives me a better chance of making a higher and competitive salary.
For all the reasons that I have listed, I do believe that attending college is important.
