Leadership from the Inside Out by Lauren - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leadership skills are absolutely necessary for success in college and beyond. Yet, I feel like you can just “get by” in college without them. However, I feel as though in order to be successful in college, you do not need to enter it with strong leadership skills. In my experience, I feel like I truly developed my leadership skills through my experiences in college; which, in turn, has made me successful. College forces you to take on the role of a leader because it is the first time you are truly independent and responsible for yourself and your education.

A good leader never loses sight of his or her goal. My goal throughout college has been to achieve a degree in education; and even more importantly, to become a high-quality teacher. Since I have been working towards becoming an educator, I have developed my leadership skills through my opportunities in my path. These opportunities included classes, observations, and student teaching. In high school, I absolutely hated being the center of attention and loathed doing presentations in front of others. Now, in college, I have grown accustomed to presenting to others and have taken on the qualities of a leader.

Sports have always been a part of my life where I have felt like a leader. Since I have always excelled in sports, my peers and teammates began to turn to me. They had relied on me to lead them, and I could not let them down. It was challenging to become a leader, but these skills have made me grow and exceed in ways that I never imagined I could.
