A Dream Come True by Lauren - July 2020 Scholarship Essay
My dream classroom is one in which the teacher takes the time to recognize and accommodate every student’s learning style. Regardless of which subject it is, or what the classroom physically looks like, my ideal class depends on the teacher. A teacher that takes the time to learn what works best for their students is quintessential. This sort of educational instruction produces the environment most conducive to learning for me. In my ideal class, every student’s questions and concerns are not only taken seriously but answered in a way that best suits the student. If a student doesn’t understand a topic, the teacher would take the time to explain it to them in a way that best suits them. The teacher would take the time to get to know each class, and change which teaching methods are used in accordance with what helps the class learn best. Lesson plans that are flexible, and susceptible to change would be an important tool in my dream classroom. When teachers try to change the class to fit the lesson rather than the other way around, the class is often forced to learn in an unnatural and inefficient way. An ideal class would have lessons catered to the students. If one class usually does better with reading from a textbook, and another class prefers when the material is explained verbally, then the teacher would recognize this and plan accordingly. If a teacher notices that one student is struggling, they would try different approaches until they find one that works. They would not give up or keep trying to teach them in the same way. A class where the teacher makes an effort to understand and cater to how their students learn is my dream classroom.
Most of my experiences in classes have been shaped by the teacher. There are some classes I have done better in because I had teachers that taught in a way that worked best for me. On the other hand, there are some classes that were harder for me to succeed in, because of the way the material was taught. My dream classroom would help me excel because the way I learn something has a great impact on my education process. When I am exposed to many different ways to learn the subject, I learn which method works best for me, and can apply that for the future. Learning in a way that allows me to really have a firm grasp on the subject helps me think and process the information for myself. Instead of memorizing and regurgitating, I would gain a much deeper understanding and appreciation of the subject. A teacher knows what works best for their students, and applies that knowledge would allow all it’s students to excel. A classroom like that would be a dream come true.
