Varsity Tutors Scholarship Entry by Lauren - January 2020 Scholarship Essay

My school, Montevallo High, doesn’t have much unique or new technology that we use since we are a small school but the small amount of technology that we have is pretty helpful when needed. We have Chromebooks, whiteboards, tablets, and apps that many other schools have and it’s handy. Most, if not all, helped me and others through classes and even become more organized with our work. I have a very busy schedule, school clubs during school hours, after school activities, sports, and I also have lots of hospitalizations because of an illness so it can be hard to stay on top of my school work. Many of these apps and technology helped me go through high school swiftly.
All of my teachers use Google Classroom to post assignments when students are absent from school. I love this app, I can stay on top of assignments at home, learn on the go, or even do the lesson in the hospital. Google Classroom also automatically puts the assignments due to my calendar when I link my phone to it. Notifications that go to my email help me know when to turn in the assignment or if I haven’t completed it too. I can ask the teacher questions and ask the whole class about what I missed while out in this app. If there is a group assignment I can find the student from the class I’m in from the list of student emails. This is also how I keep up with some clubs I am in. Speaking of clubs, let's talk about two apps I use to keep up with my assortment of school groups. Remind is an app that is easy to use, you type in the code that is made and given to you in your cell phone and adds it to your contacts. It automatically puts you in the group and you get reminded through text but sometimes it might not work with androids well, so that's why Group-me is another great app to use. It is pretty much a group chat but in school, I use it a lot to ask questions and to set dates in my calendar.
Another thing that I like to use is the Chromebooks. I can check out one from the library at our school and use it to take notes in class or study in one of my free periods. The Chromebooks already have google classroom installed on it as well and apps that can help students study for the ACT. During my free time, I sometimes go and study on the helpful apps on there like Khan Academy. I am happy and love the apps and technology that we have at our school even if it’s not a lot, they help me study, prepare for tests, and stay on schedule even when I am absent from school.
