From A Student's Perspective by Kyrie - January 2015 Scholarship Essay

In recent years I have experienced a few of my past teachers who have been required to teach students from a set of “core standards” or “guidelines”. I find this mode of educating students quite dull. I am not exaggerating when I say that teaching students from an unambiguous course schedule is extremely lackluster and uninspiring. I also see this mode of educating students rather offensive towards teachers. With these requirements, teachers are unable to teach their students something out of the ordinary that has the potential to be more useful to a student’s education. I want a teacher who is willing to step away from these core requirements and educate a student to the best of their ability, not to the best of the course requirement’s abilities. It is difficult for me to desire to learn when I am given the same lecture at the same rate as other students in another part of the country. I want to be lectured over what students should expect in the future and how to develop strategies to solve the many world class problems that will develop in years to come.

I want a teacher who is willing to speak to me as if I am more than just an average student. Every student is different from one another, not all students are in school because they have to be. I genuinely love to learn and become enlightened by a series of unfamiliar concepts and ideas. When a teacher is eager to teach me something I have never learned before, that is when I truly begin to learn. In a classroom setting, I want a teacher to give me the opportunity to express my thoughts and opinions freely without feeling judged by the teacher or fellow peers. When a teacher constantly stresses for me to share my opinion on something I am passionate about, I find that I learn much better than if I were to read a book on how to express or have an opinion. If a teacher were to take these tips into consideration, students would have greater desire to attend class and obtain crucial information that has the potential to be beneficial for the student’s future.
