My Life Lesson by Kyle - October 2013 Scholarship Essay

Although I have learned many life lessons in over the years, one lesson has impacted me more than the rest. Work ethic is definitely the biggest life lesson that I have learned in my seventeen years on earth. As a young kid, I always knew my grandparents had a nice place. They have a pool, a big lawn, horses, cows, and orchards. When I turned twelve my dad forced me to start working around my grandparents farm. Through the years I have begun to realize how much hard work it takes to maintain such a nice place.
Every year that I have worked on my grandparents farm I have had to do more work than I did in the previous year; however, I have not minded that because every year I have grown a better understanding of why people need to work hard. I have learned that I need to be efficient and do my tasks correctly. Everybody needs to do those two things because if they do not then their boss will fire them and they will not make money.
This is what work ethic all boils down to. If I want to get anywhere in life and make money so that I can survive and live the life that I want to, I have to work hard. No one is going to just hand me money or my dream life; I have to go out there and earn it. The way I think of it is that I have to earn the right to relax and be happy. I hate how some people never work hard. I consider not working hard in life as cheating.
I am thankful that my parents did not give me things as a child. They made me earn everything. If I want something, I have to work to make money so that I can buy that something. As a kid I hated that, but as I have gotten older I have learned to appreciate it and welcome it. I have become an immensely better person because I have learned the value of hard work.
