Technology: A Beneficial Good by Kyle - January 2020 Scholarship Essay

Technology has only had a positive effect on my learning experience. Whether it be in the class room or at home, I believe it’s only furthered my learning at school. With the ever expanding internet and the plethora of applications accessible to students, it’s never been easier to study and gather information and that can only benefit educational industry.
To start, writing a research paper has never been easier. The internet allows students’ access to a huge database of information that gives the opportunity for research papers to fill to the brim with information and all the information allows students to formulate their own opinions on subjects. Recently I wrote a paper on video games and whether that correlates to violence. Although I had a based opinion on what I felt, the information I gained and learned was absolutely fascinating. I gained a more informed and well educated opinion and learned a lot more on gun violence and mental health in general. And although articles may have biased in them, it’s up to the person to recognize and interrupt the information however they see fit. Also with the internet, it’s easy to dust up on old material. I have looked up material from the beginning of the semester in a YouTube video, or look up problems I can practice In order to help me with finals. The internet allows students to learn and relearn information on a platform that is ever expanding.
Furthermore, the advancement of technology allows communication to be extremely easy. Group projects can be done all over the phone or coordinating a group study session or get together has never been easier. Technology allows for people to communicate or coordinate with ease. For example, a recent project we were assigned to do was a fake presidential campaign in which a large group of us had to coordinate an effort to put together this campaign, including television and radio ads, research papers, opinion polls, and such. With technology, we were able to coordinate who does what and times to meet up to put everything together. It made the project so much easier and we put together a really well done project. Also with advancing technology, since high school students only can really see a teacher one hour a day, technology allows for students to be constant communication with the teacher at all times. Students can get help with an assignment from a teacher or a peer. Students can talk to teachers about school outside of the class room, for example I use it to get any assignments early that I will miss for school, allowing me to not fall behind and stay on top of my studies. Communication has never been easier and only helps to bring together in advancing their education.
Finally, applications that I have used over the years have been so helpful. Apps like quizlet or kahoot have helped me personally with my studies extensively. Quizlet is an app that allows someone to make flashcards on any topic and then can quiz oneself. I have used the app in English class to help study vocab or in physics class to study physics terms. It’s a fast and easy way to learn terms for any class and it’s simple to set up. It’s been very beneficial to me to learn vocab terms as I have always had a tough time with. With the application of kahoot, it’s a fun and competitive way to help students brush up on material. Teachers in my English class have used it to help us clean up our definitions with vocab and even my math teachers have had us use it to practice math problems. It provides a fun yet competitive environment where a student will try to be the fastest while being accurate in their answer. Teachers then can go over each question to clarify any errors students may have. I have been using these applications at home or in the classroom and they have only been beneficial to furthering my learning. Students have easy access to these applications and I’m sure I will be using them for years to come.
Technology has had such a great impact on my learning. It helps me with research and relearning material, communicating and coordinating with people, and helping me study and clean up on material. It’s only helped me and I will be using it for many years to come to benefit and advance me in my education.
